Issue 6: Cultural Safety

Issue 6: Cultural Safety

Centering Cultural Safety

Cultural safety calls for “an environment where people of diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds can feel respected and safe —spiritually, socially, emotionally, and physically — from discrimination and denial of their identity and needs” (UBC VPFO) and viewed as a five step process…

Cultural Awareness -> Cultural Sensitivity -> Cultural Competency -> Cultural Humility -> Cultural Safety

Issue 6 invited contributions to center cultural safety, share ways to make our learning community a safe haven, appreciate belongingness, promote intersectionality, and intercultural understanding, and express one’s culture in a learning environment.

RESPECT magazine is excited to publish many interesting takeaways on cultural safety. Happy reading!
